    TODAY
    June 29th, 2009

Outside my window... The sun has gone to bed and soon, must I.

I am thinking...  I Wish I had gotten off the computer when I hung up with Mom and Dad on Skype.  Should have instead finished the scrapbook page I've been working on.

I am thankful for... air conditioning on hot and humid Florida days.  NPR and Fox News.

From the kitchen... Mary Beth and I had burgers, corn on the cob, watermelon and salad for dinner.  On a quilt in the living room while watching "Bolt".  We finished it up with making "button necklaces."

I am wearing... capris and a Youth Councils t-shirt.

I am creating... new scrapbook pages (probably 10-12 in the last week), Home League quarterly and time with my daughter.

I am going... to the beach tomorrow evening after work with my friend Suzanne R. and Mary Beth.  Then I'm going to Chattanooga to buy toys on Friday.

I am reading... Daniel Silva's Gabriel Allon book, "The Confessor."

I am hoping... that Mary Beth doesn't kick me too much tonight.  Dwayne's at Camp Keystone with the boys and she always sleeps with us when one of us is out of town.

I am hearing... the local news.  Love living in central time zone.

Around the house... basically tidy as Suzanne's coming and the boy's weren't here today to mess it up!  So much easier to deal with only one other person in the house.

One of my favorite things... air conditioning.  Facebook.  Skype.  My daughter.  Scrapbooking.  Okay, so that's more than one thing.  Get over it.  I'm verbose.

A few plans for the rest of the week... work on VBS, Sunbeam Camp, stats and reports, beach time with Suzanne, visiting Lydia and Allison and Chattanooga to buy toys.

  • Shoebox Greetings Project

I recently wrote this for submission to "The Evangel", our Florida Divisional Magazine for The Salvation Army and thought I would share the amazing story of this project with you all!!!!

    “Shoebox Greetings” Project Report

    Captain Marion Durham

“Shoebox Greetings” usually are cards sent from one friend to another.  However, recently the Home Leagues in the Florida Division were part of an unusual “Shoebox Greetings” project as they participated in the giving of gifts to the women officers of the Brazilian Territory.

At Florida Women’s Retreat, “High Heels In High Places…Walking Worthy In Way Cute Shoes,” the Home Leagues each brought a shoebox filled with goodies such as perfume, lotion, a watch, jewelry, etc.  The items were placed in a quart-size ziplock bag to be hand-delivered to the women officers in Brazil by Lt. Colonel Martha Jewett and Captain Marion Durham, special guests for “The Congresso Feminino”—a women’s congress on Morena Island in Brazil the following week.

Much care was given by the Home Leagues in selecting the gifts.  Each officer was prayed for individually as well as the upcoming spiritual retreat for the women of The Salvation Army in Brazil.  Every Florida Home League was encouraged to include a personal note, photograph and encouragement for their assigned officer.  There are 73 women serving in Brazil as officers or in the Training College as cadets.

Major Kathy Hobgood, creator of the project and Women’s Ministries Secretary for Florida, was concerned about all of the gifts making it through customs.  A special letter was written on Salvation Army letterhead and prepared in both English and Portuguese, by Captain Dwayne Durham, who was traveling with his wife.  He also had the letter officially notarized.  When asked about the upcoming trip, Captain Marion asked everyone for prayer in getting the bags into the country without any problems, taxes or duties.

Upon arrival at customs in the airport, Lt. Colonel Jewett and Captains Durham continued to pray as it came time to go through official channels.  Three times they tried to get into the correct lane for people entering the country and three times they were told to go through another line.  “I think the official believes we are from the airlines because of our uniform,” said Captain Marion Durham.  Lt. Colonel Jewett tried to explain that they were not from Delta airlines, but again they were told to into a different line.

Another official opened up a roped section and ushered the three uniformed Salvation Army officers to another section.  A third person looked at their paperwork and waved them right past the other airline passengers who were getting bags x-rayed and opened for inspection.

“It was as if the Holy Spirit opened up a special line just for us.  Talk about the uniform opening doors!” said Captain Marion Durham.  “We got on the other side of customs and we just couldn’t believe what God had done!  No one ever even looked inside our suitcases!  At all!”

The answers to prayer continued throughout the Congress and when the gifts were given to the officers, it was a beautiful experience.  The zip lock bags were put in Hallmark gift bags brought by Captains Durham in their luggage which they then labeled for each Brazilian officer.

Following the first session of the weekend, the officers and cadets were taken into a nearby room where the bags had been placed.  Captains were asked to go on one side of the room and Majors on the other.  Cadets and the one Lt. Colonel and Commissioner in the territory remained in the center while translators assisted Captains Durham and Lt. Colonel Martha Jewett in passing out the gifts in a personal manner.

“We didn’t bring them all this way in our suitcases just let them have them without special love,” indicated Captain Marion Durham.

Lt. Colonel Jewett explained the project and how the Home Leagues had prepared the gifts and prayed for each officer individually.  Florida’s Divisional Headquarters also had purchased a set of uniform loops for each woman and through Major Robert Bagley and the Southern Territorial Trade Department, new neck pins were made for the women.  The pins were crafted in the shape of a large red shield and said “The Salvation Army” in Portuguese.  The ladies cheered at the news as new loops can be costly to purchase and their territory’s uniform minute states that a neck pin must be worn at all times.  When Major Kathy Hobgood had the pins made, she did not know of this regulation.  It must have been a God-inspired idea!!!

Each officer was called by name and then given their bags with a special hug and love from the Florida Division via Captains Durham and Lt. Colonel Jewett.  Many photographs were taken and across language barriers, names and stories were exchanged. It was a beautiful time and memories were made.   The camaraderie was a beautiful sight and it was certainly evident that God has blessed “The Shoebox Greetings Project.”

    Off to Brazil tomorrow!

Well, after months of praying and planning, we leave tomorrow for Brazil.  Two weeks in South America, here I come!  My workshop hand-outs and power points have already been sent for translation as well as my speaking/testimony for the Friday night meeting.  Lyrics for special music too.  I feel good about what I've planned and comfortable with all my assignments.  Now that feels good.

However, I am not naive enough not to be flexible or do more than I have been asked.  We'll see what happens!

I am so thankful I have this opportunity and believe it is an answer to prayer.  Ever since Mom and Dad got their orderes to serve in Brazil, I have wanted to go and see what they were doing and "partner" with them if you will.  But tickets/visa are quite expensive and when I got the invitation to speak at the women's congress, it just seemed perfect.

Have I told everyone that Dwayne's ticket is being paid through frequent flyer/amex points?  That too is an answer to prayer.

Our plan is this---fly out tomorrow to Atlanta and then overnight to Sao Paulo arriving on Wednesday.  Overnight at Mom and Dad's apartment in Sao Paulo which is in the same building as the headquarters where they work.  Thursday we, all the staff and guests, travel to the hotel where the women's congress is being held, Ihla Moreno.  It's a small island that doesn't have cars.

Friday the women arrive!  I can't wait to see them and give them all the "Shoebox Greetings" gifts we're carrying with us from the Home Leaguers here in Florida.  I tell you it's been quite a job to sort, label and prepare all the gifts, making sure we could fit them all and arrrange them in our luggage.

We've paired it down to three checked pieces, with the gifts, hallmark bags, and our personal items/clothes.  We have carry-on bags too with all the essentials.  I hate that quart-size 3-1-1- rule.  I find it so annoying.  Stupid terrorists.

Anyway, we have the weekend with the women and I believe the Holy Spirit is going to fall like rain!!!  I just have a feeling it's going to be such an anointed time in the Lord.    I am believing this and asking everyone to pray with us about the retreat.

I will not only get to travel with Dwayne, which I love to do, but also see my old friend, Beki Barringer Phillips, who is working for the Army in the East.  She danced in our wedding and we haven't seen each other in years.  I spoke to her on the phone when we were stationed in Cambridge, but I probably haven't seen her in like 12-15 years!

The congress is several hours away from Mom and Dad's and following that weekend we'll travel a bit more...to RIO!  Yes, "when my baby smiles at me I go to Rio, de Janeiro!"  Yes!  I can't wait!  Four days there for the first part of our vacation with Mom and Dad.  Copacabana and Ipanema Beach!  The Christ statue!   Then we're going to "Little Switzerland" and a few places along the way back towards Sao Paulo!

    I can't believe it!

I feel good about details done in prep for leaving the corps.

Praying for the kids and Grandma Carol.

I've decided not to worry about it and just pray that Jeremiah listens and obeys.  What else can I do?  I'm certainly not staying home!  Wink!

On another note---got to spend a wee bit of time with the Mars Hill girls who are in Destin (hour plus away from PC) last night and this morning.  It was saaaaaaaaad to leave today.  Hated it.

    Shout-out to you, Mars Hillians!

I at first was so disappointed that Brazil and Destin with them were the same week, but now I'm thankful.  Because if it wasn't, then I wouldn't have been able to sneak over for one night.  If we had been near Cecilia on the Atlanta, no way....too far.  We've gone lots of different places, but this was the first time near me.  That was great!!!!

I really don't know if and when I'll be able to post or be on facebook when I'm gone.  So if not, have a wonderful two weeks and I'll talk to you when I return!

    Women's Retreat 2009

"High Heels in High Places...Walking Worthy in Way Cute Shoes!"

Just a quick report on a great weekend.  As usual, I had a big list of things to do, bring, teach, etc. at Women's Camp, I mean Women's Retreat!  My first here in Florida.  It was held at The Rosen Centre in Orlando.  In some ways I missed having it at "camp", but I so enjoyed my room alone.  Quiet time.  Cool sheets. Cable tv and no one in the bathroom but me.  Wink!  Oh, and no one snored!  Or turned the lights on at 4:30am, like what has happened to me at other women's camps.

Had a much bigger delegations originally signed up, but for various and valid reasons, most of them cancelled.  That was disappointing, but since I had to do a presentation on Brazil, teach a workshop and process/organize the gifts from our division's Home League's for the female officers in Brazil, it turned out to be for the good.  I was busy!  Oh, and Songsters too.  That was no big deal, just took up some time and if I had to "babysit" some of my group, it would have been difficult.

Major Kathy Hobgood went all out for the women and you could tell it was all done with detail and love!  We sure are going to miss her here in Florida.  And Eddie too!  I was teasing him, calling him, Lt. Colonel Hobgood.  He "scoffed" to say the least.

I loved spending time with my peeps---Pam and Frances.  It was good to have some girl time with them, even if it was a busy weekend.  See the photos for shots of us at one of my favorite restaurants, "Cafe Tu Tu Tango", having tapas or appetizer portions/desserts.  It was good!  Especially since I never had dinner on Friday night because we got there a bit late, missing registration, having to just check in the hotel, get ready for the night meeting, drop off grab bags,  shoebox greetings, etc.

All of the meetings were good...danced like a crazy woman Saturday night at Cinderella's Ball.

But Sunday morning was so wonderful.  The room was decorated by Major Amy Kelly like the "King's Chambers" and as part of Songsters, we sang, "How Beautiful" and "Come Into the King's Chambers" and it was wonderful.  Worshipful.  Had a really sweet time of prayer with Mrs. Jewett at the altar, praying for our upcoming trip to Brazil.  I can't believe we leave a week from tomorrow!  I loved the meeting and the Lord really touched me to "sanctify myself" for the trip.  I think it's in 1 or 2 Peter when the scripture tells leaders to "sanctify themselves for their sake" that is the "flock under their care."

All and all, despite the work, it was a lovely weekend and I am so grateful to everyone involved.  Tomorrow I'm going to show the pictures in my regular Home League time and show the ladies who cancelled what they missed!!!

Kids---busy afternoon with them.  Poor Mary Beth got her little feelings hurt when one of her friends didn't want to come over and play and another one couldn't come over to play.  Jeremiah was having homework troubles.  And I was trying to help them both.

Women really are multi-taskers---I had their troubles, laundry, dinner and vacuuming all going at the same time!  And we had a good dinner and made it on time to T-Ball at 6:00pm!  Whew!

Skyped Mom and Dad tonight about details for the trip.  Exciting days!  And then I worked on some other details for Wednesday's Civic Annual Appreciation Dinner.

So, it's 10:30pm, going to bed...tomorrow is another day!

    MOM DAY!

Earlier this week, Monday to be exact after the busy holiday weekend, that I wish I could take a Mom Day to catch up on laundry and a few other things that I had let slide during the festivities.  But I didn't and went to the office.  Tuesday was Home League.  But today, poor John-Luke's throat was so swollen and he was puney, so he stayed home and I did too.  So I did "Mom things..."

    • Six loads of laundry (folded and put away too!  Yes!)
    • Made JL homemade chicken soup for lunch
    • Gave the cat a bath
    • Vacummed
    • Cleaned the kids bathroom (boys are gross! + post-cat bath yuck)
    • Dinner
    • Dishwasher loaded, run and unloaded twice
    • Jeremiah homework help
    • MB hair check (lice has been going around at school)

And the normal work stuff, keeping up with projects...Brazil testimony, Civic Annual, more stuff for Women's Retreat.

Now I don't list the things I did to somehow feel proud of myself (although I do!) or to brag or remind myself of what I didn't get around too...but instead to say, it's okay to take a Mom day.  And I like them.  Cooking, Cleaning and Caring for my kiddos makes me happy.  And I never even left the house except to go to the mailbox and wave good-bye to the kiddos on their way to the bus stop.

Yes, I wish I had made more progress on Brazil projects or could have done some errands, but it was good to just be with JL.  We watched "Bridge To Terabithia" again.  (nothing on tv in the morning except Mom stuff and pre-school stuff and he was so bored with all that...what happened to the days when we would watch "Blues Clues" together every day before his afternoon nap?).  That movie always makes me cry.  I always want it to end differently.  But it is so good.  Maybe tomorrow if he's home again, we'll watch "Spiderwick Chronicles" which the kids think I bought for them, but truthfully, I wanted it!  Love things with imagination!

Back to Mom Day....I've never understood why people get so offended by the idea of cooking, cleaning and caring for your children as being "beneath" them or not giving them satisfaction.  I was created to do those things.  And yes, I was created to do other things as well.  But they don't make up my identity.

I actually listened tonight to a bit of TBN, the Christian channel.  Which I probably have only done one other time in my life.  Anyway, the preacher was talking about being "in Christ".  My identity is "in Christ."  I've been thinking about that today too as that is part of our "Having A Mary Heart In A Martha World" Brazilian "Congresso Feminino".  And my testimony involves a couple things, but one thing is about having our worth in Christ and not in what we DO.

And I certainly have days that I DO a lot.  Whether I'm at the office or at home.

I like the fact that I can "be in my own head" in the midst of all of THIS I call my life and meditating on the truth's of God.  It's so reassuring and beautiful.

Thank you Lord for all you do in me and through me.  Even if some days it is just cuddled up with chicken soup and my sick kid!
